OptoTraffic that pulled out of its contract with the Town of Cheverly after complaints about its technology still operates programs in several local jurisdictions.
Cheverly has replaced speed cameras provided by Lanham-based Optotraffic with new cameras run by a different company.
Traffic cameras despised by so many drivers don't just nail speeders and red-light runners. They're helping police nab criminals.
Police in Red Bank, Tenn., caught four suspects in a violent home invasion by reviewing images from a red-light camera near the victims' home. Four suspects tied up two victims and then ransacked the house, police say; one robber allegedly smashed his boot into a victim's face.
Salisbury leaps towards School-zone Speed Enforcement
In March 2010, a study conducted at Wicomico Middle School by the SPD showed that within a seven-day period, more than 6,800 vehicles in that area were recorded traveling 12 or more miles per hour over the speed limit.
Col. Ivan Barkley of the Salisbury Police Department said the locations were selected based on pedestrian traffic and complaints regarding speeding near schools.
Results showed the number of vehicles each day traveling 12 or more miles per hour above the posted speed limits between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. ranged from 2,914 on College Avenue to 73 on Spring Avenue.
Bloomberg Wants Red-Light Cameras On Every Corner in New York City
"We cannot afford to put a cop on every corner, we're going to have to do more with technology."
New York. CBS Local
There's a new war between Mayor Michael Bloomberg and state lawmakers over more red-light cameras on New York City streets.
He said red-light cameras save lives — the people who get hit by motorists running red lights.
"Every time there's somebody hit it would be nice to say, okay, assemblyman and senator so and so didn't think that person's life … these are the lives of our people we're talking about," Bloomberg said.
